Baby Persian Jirds in Week 6.

This is a page with photos of my Baby Jirds at 6 weeks. For more information on Persian Jirds and pictures of older and younger baby jirds go back to the Baby Persian Jird Index and choose one of the links on the left.

Apologies for the gap in photos but I was taking a holiday and Chris didn't get time to take any photos last week. I've put some resonably good quality photos on this page so please be patient - they are worth the wait.

By six weeks the babies look quite like baby mongolian gerbils - except for the obvious Jird ears, tails and eyes. Either they are late developers or we have 4 little girls. I've worked it out and the percentage chance of this is just over 6% which isn't that unlikely (think flipping a coin and it coming up heads four times). Or alternatively since it is such a small litter mum could be carrying some kind of lethal recessive X chromosome gene but this is a lot less likely than it just being a coincidence or me not being able to work out their gender properly. Update: Dodgy sexing on my part. We had one male, called Bob, who lived with us for many years before sadly passing away.

I'm getting hand tame now.

We had one scare where one of the babies was clicking and squeaking and I rushed them off to the vets. Of course they were all fine. I noticed again today that one of the babies I took out to photo was doing this but hopefully it is just the noise they make when they are unhappy.Update: Yes they are quite vocal when annoyed.

Look at my nice long tail.

They are all now fully weaned and eating everything that the parents are including the live food (ugh). Dad is back in the nest and everyone sleeps in a big heap.

We've started to get them out and handle them regularly in the hope of getting them hand tame. Actually the parents have become very tame due to the amount of food that they have been getting and come racing out to see what is up when I come into the room whilst the babies leg it on instinct!

Lots of whiskers!
